The Wisdom of the Cross

Coffee With God: 3/17/2023 | 1 Corinthians 1:18/21

“For the word of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God… For since, in the wisdom of God, the world did not know God through wisdom, it pleased God through the foolishness of what we preach to save those who believe.”

It was never through the wise, the mighty, or the powerful that God would bring salvation to the world. No, God loves to do things the opposite way we humans expect. God has chosen to save sinners not through might or wisdom, riches or honor, but through a simple message humbly received by those who have been brought low.

To the world, what we believe is foolish. “A symbol of death represents the greatest source of life?” Yes. The cross represents the only source of life.

What is counterintuitive to the natural mind is essential in the Kingdom of God. To really live, we must first die. To receive our true identity, we must lose our old one. We must deny ourselves to become who we were always intended to be.

The reason the cross is at the heart of the Christian message is not only because it’s the place where our sins were atoned for, but it’s also the place we go to die ourselves. And in dying to the old self and the old life, we enter into the new life God has waiting for us.
